With cholesterol rising to 314, my doctor at Trinity Medical Associates encouraged aggressive diet and exercise modifications to see if we could get that number down without using medication.
I decided to visit VitalSigns, which was created and is under the direct supervision of Trinity Medical Associates.
I was so excited after my first meeting with Terri Stewart – the VS Wellness Nurse. I came away encouraged and with a better understanding of how my body processed the carbohydrates I craved.
I knew I would need ongoing help to make this work, so we scheduled weekly meetings for the first few months where I would weigh in and have my food journal reviewed. This accountability helped me tremendously! Terri was always patient and answered all of my questions and walked me through the challenges of eating healthy when I traveled or ate out, which is quite often.
I found it wasn’t difficult eating a low-carbohydrate diet. Terri taught me to simply be aware of what I was eating and how to make healthy choices. She challenged me to look at the labels of foods I ate and see how many carbohydrates were listed. That’s all? I could do this! There was no weighing of food, measuring, counting calories – simply an awareness, which was very releasing.
By eating three healthy meals a day and two snacks (all of which contain protein) and drinking lots of water, I am basically never hungry and continue to lose about one pound a week. I have not felt this good since I don’t know when!
Together with learning to eat healthier, I also worked out at the VitalSigns gym three times a week. One of the VS personal trainers put together an individualized workout designed just for me.
After only 12 weeks, my blood work revealed a drop in cholesterol from 314 to 264. My doctor explained that my cholesterol would continue to drop if I continued this healthier lifestyle.
I couldn’t be more thrilled. I have lost a total of 18 pounds and dropped from a size 12 to a size 8, with an average weight loss of one pound per week.
