Onmerry_christmas_in_green_193356 behalf of Trinity Medical Associates and VitalSigns, I want to wish all of you a blessed Christmas and a wonderful New Year. Our passion is to help you lead a healthier life. To avoid hypocrisy, I must periodically reconsider the true nature of “wellness”. You see, I burn the candle at both ends, often sacrificing sleep and recreation and time with friends. All of this in order to promote “wellness”. Isn’t it strange that it’s so easy to lose perspective in the midst of busyness and details? As I’ve said before, wellness is akin to the biblical concept of Shalom. It is a state of peace, first with God, second with other people and third with our place in the world. It is expressed in words like contentment, gratitude, creativity, curiosity, fellowship, worship and joy. As a physician, I am very focused at times on physical health and do not apologize for that. We were given bodies for a reason and must take care of them. Our bodies allow us to create, express gratitude and enjoy relationships (in many different ways!) It’s impossible to isolate physical health from emotional and spiritual health. The Psalmist David speaks of unforgiven sin resulting in physical anguish:

“For when I kept silent my bones wasted away
through my groaning all day long
For day and night your hand was heavy upon me
my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer

And later of a restored relationship:

Oh taste and see that The Lord is good!
Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.”

This Christmas season, I hope you will “taste and see that The Lord is good” and find the wellness (shalom) that he alone can offer!
